The Enlightened Office Worker

The office is a destructive habitat for the human: it can have a debilitating effect on almost every part of the upper body including the crucial structure of your spine which will degrade over time by itself, let alone with the aid of a poor workplace set up and equally poor posture. What’s worse is the indifference of many employers toward ergonomics and postural education. At Associates in Chiropractic, we help workers take their health into their own hands.

Taking stock right now

As you read this, you can probably identify a few points in your body that are stiff so start listening! We are good at ignoring pain signals and pushing on until we reach a breaking point, but this is highly counterproductive. Instead if we listen to the slight twinges of tightness and address them on the spot, we can take great steps toward keeping our bodies limber against the degradation inherent in office life.

Here are some prevention-minded ideas to try:

  • Shoulder shrug: simply lift your shoulders up toward your ears, hold for a few seconds then let them fall.
  • Shoulder pull back: essentially you are squeezing your shoulder blades toward eachother, expanding your chest and relieving tension in the upper back.
  • Wrist stretches: bring hands together with palms and fingers touching and press them into eachother, thereby flexing and stretching your wrists which take a lot of repetitive stress from typing.
  • Stand up, bend over from the waist and just let yourself hang.

At our office in Hackensack, we believe in the innate ability of every worker to keep themselves healthy and we want to help you do just that. Give our office a call to schedule an appointment today.
