Making Exercise a Ritual

Excercise as a ritual

Traditional exercise is not for everyone. Think about it this way: most people would gladly exert themselves if there was fun involved, i.e. a game of pick up basketball, or a hike to be rewarded with a beautiful view. But the thought of 45 minutes on a run, even with the newest episode of their favorite podcast, seems like a kind of torture. However, your body still needs the health benefit of those 45 minutes.

Before we can change our behavior, we need to change our attitude and turn exercise into a ritual rather than a chore. This is both the most difficult part, and the crux that the rest of your fitness life relies upon: your brain must be convinced of its worthiness (and its essential fun) before you will regularly perform any physical activity. Sometimes selecting and focussing on health benefits is not good enough! You know that you need a lower cholesterol, better blood pressure levels and more muscle but this is not tantalizing enough to get your brain motivated.

Three things we focus on at Associates in Chiropractic are:

Baby steps at first:

as little as 10 minutes a day is good enough at first to ease your body into the process.

What do you love?

Maybe you have a penchant for swimming or biking that you have been to lazy to explore. Your greatest chance of success lies in picking an activity that you love.

Habit first, results later:

developing the ritual will help you stay focused on what is important. The results will come slowly, but steadily. The ritual will keep you coming back for more.

With a new year upon us, there is no greater time than now to find an activity that truly makes you happy and start pursuing it. We can help you get motivated and keep your body in fine shape along the way!
