Handy Tips for Hand Health

Life is miserable with hurting hands

So take note when your fingers start to ache after a day of office work. The intensive typing and clicking involved in computer work are taking a toll on your hands that could come back to bite you in the future! Office workers are at risk for the development of serious hand disorders including carpal tunnel syndrome and arthritis which is an irreversible condition. The problem is repetitive micro-trauma- the same thing that happens to our lower body joints when we walk, bike and run occurs in the tiny joints of our fingers and the rather larger wrist joint. It’s time to stop ignoring pain in the fingers and hands and take action to prevent hand conditions from defining your old age.

 Step 1 is always awareness

The health-conscious office workers will take steps to set themselves up for success- When you become aware of a siff, sore feeling in your fingers, it’s time to take a break from the keyboard. Try these stretches:

  • Finger taps: start with your hand open and your fingers spread. Take turns gently tapping each finger onto the pad of your thumb.
  • Wrist release: use your right hand to gently pull back the fingers of your left hand until you feel a stretch. Release and repeat on the other hand.
  • Finger spreading: start with hands open but fingers together and then move them to a spread position.
