Small Ways to Improve Health in 2018
Responding to the unique health demands of 2018
At Associates in Chiropractic, we are passionate about preventative healthcare. As each year goes by, we treat more people who are suffering from 21st century lifestyles: forward head syndrome from cell phone use, early onset spinal degeneration from white collar work, poor static posture because of underdevelopment of the core muscles. Lamenting that we are less active than our ancestors is as useless as lamenting the linear progression of humankind. If our lifestyles are going to require less movement, then we have to respond by mandating more movement for ourselves. Read on to find out simple ways we can do this, as part of a healthy, preventative 21st century lifestyle.
Brainstorming four ideas for improving health this year
Stop overdosing on caffeine: as Americans, we are chronically overcaffeinated and chronically dehydrated. Replacing some of your caffeine intake with H2O will help your body in innumerable ways without sacrificing too much of the perceived energy benefit.
Plank in between each episode of your next binge marathon: start with 20 seconds and work your way up. Make it a personal challenge. Binge watching is not good for your spine, so any movement that you can fit in while enjoying your favorite show is going to be an improvement.
Set an alarm to remind you to stand up: once an hour on the hour, get up, stretch and shake out those tight muscles. Maybe even take a walk and have a gulp of water while you’re at it.
Get a buddy: we understand it’s hard to make friends as you get older. Mine the ones you have or reach out to someone at the gym and create a connection. Studies show that working out with a friend is a crucial part of succesful fitness. Another person keeps you accountable and reduces the perceived intensity of your workout.
