Sciatica During Pregnancy

As if it wasn’t already a large enough nuisance, sciatica is also a common side effect of pregnancy. For the expectant mother, this pain can often compound an already stressful and painful situation. The sciatic nerve is the largest in the human body, beginning in the lower back and extending through the buttocks into the legs. When this nerve is pressurized, symptoms of numbness and shooting pain can be felt anywhere between the buttocks and the feet.

As it relates to pregnancy, sciatica is often onset by the myriad physical changes that occur, especially during the third trimester. When the center of gravity shifts forward to account for the baby, the lordotic curve is emphasized, muscles in the region are tightened and the nerves can be pressurized. Other factors including fluid retention and a growing uterus conspire to put more pressure on the sciatic nerve. Typically, more weight leads to more pain.

At Associates in Chiropractic, we have expertise in identifying and treating pregnancy related sciatica. We apply spinal adjustment to restore motion to immobilized joints, freeing up the nerves from pressure and decreasing the pain.

If you are suffering from sciatica during pregnancy, do not accept this pain as just another thing that comes along with the process. Call our office in Hackensack at (201) 342-6111 to schedule an appointment today.
