Lifting: Not as Easy as it Looks

Lift right to keep the body injury free

The lift is a motion which tends to increase the weight of the upper body and therefore place a great strain on the muscles and structures in the lower back. This means that it is one of the motions where we are most prone to injuries which can be mitigated by adhering to proper lifting form. While the way you lift is more important than the weight you lift, there is a good rule of thumb: if the object is so heavy it requires you to stoop over it to gain purchase, it is probably worth asking for help!

What does a good lift look like?

How many times have we heard the now proverbial story of someone throwing out their back while lifting something? This story is always followed up by the advice lift with your legs and not your back, but what does this really mean? Let’s take a look at the mechanics of a proper lift.

  • Object in front
  • Bend knees to a full squat and lift load in toward chest
  • Lock your back by squeezing the muscles in the lower back, core and glutes. This tightens the back and prevents strain; perhaps the most important part of the process
  • Now lift by generating power with your legs and stand straight up

Body mechanics can be used to your advantage or they can be forgotten and cause you injury; lifting is a classic case of this concept. To ensure you are moving right with a balanced spine throughout the day, give our office in Hackensack a call to schedule an appointment today.
